How Does It Work?

The best way to understand laser hair removal is to think about the hair growth process. Your body is covered in thousands of hair follicles which are tiny sacs near the surface of your skin. At the base of each follicle is a hair root, where hair cells multiply more rapidly than any other type of human cell.

As those hair cells multiply, they stack up, eventually emerging from the skin through the outer portion of the hair follicle. This process occurs in phases, and not all the hairs on your body will be in the same phase at the same time.

• Telogen, or resting stage

Does It Hurt?

Laser hair removal does not create significant discomfort or pain. There is no need for advanced anesthesia, although you can request a numbing cream if you have especially sensitive skin. As your practitioner passes the laser over the treatment area, the light comes out in pulses. That laser light is absorbed by the pigment in your hair, even the hairs that lie under the surface of your skin.

Some people describe the sensation like the snap of a rubber band against the skin. For others, the sensations noted during treatment are minimal.

What’s the Recovery Like?

There is no need for recovery time or many limitations after your laser hair removal treatments. It’s important to avoid sun exposure, as your skin will be sensitive and can be damaged by UV light in the days following treatments. You should also avoid submerging your skin in a hot bath in the days after your treatments. Avoid using medicated or abrasive skin care products for a few days as your skin adjusts.
