Skyline Smiles is proud to offer a training program for an innovative area of dental medicine called Dentox. This training program aims to provide dentists with the ability to add dermal fillers and Botox treatment to their program. Adult patients at our clinic will have the opportunity to take advantage of these classes by serving as practice cases for the trainees under the instructor’s careful guidance. As a result of these classes, dentists will be able to take advantage of botox’s benefits in their dental practice.

What Is The Role Of Botox In Dentistry?

Botox has multiple uses in dentistry, ranging from the merely cosmetic to the therapeutic. As a result, this treatment is being offered at a growing number of clinics, requiring an increase in available training locations. In addition to cosmetic treatments, botox is also used for the following in dentistry:

• TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) – In some TMD cases, the source of the patient’s pain can be traced back to the nerves and muscles radiating out from a trigger point on the jaw. When directly injected into these trigger points, Botox has been shown to bring long-term relief from the pain. While saline and anesthetics have also been used, Botox has the ability to potentially relieve the patient’s pain for up to three months.
• Bruxism – Those who clench or grind their teeth are experiencing bruxism, the medical term for this condition. Bruxism can cause serious harm to a patient’s teeth, and can also lead to facial pain and headaches. Intraoral devices are a common solution to this, but some patients find them uncomfortable or even painful to wear, or can’t keep them in all night. Botox calms the clenching action of the muscles responsible, providing relief from bruxism for some patients.
• Orthodontic Therapy – One of the oft-overlooked causes of misalignment of the jaw is muscular issues. Concerns such as mentalis muscles that are hyperactive can lead to problems with dental alignment. The use of botox treatments can make it possible to train the muscles to behave appropriately over time, preventing the need for other orthodontic treatments.

What Side Effects Should I Watch For With Botox?

When used by trained professionals, botox treatments result in few serious side-effects. If Botox spreads from the injection site, it’s possible for issues such as swallowing difficulties, breathing troubles, urinary incontinence, and muscle weakness can result. As the patient continues to receive successful treatments, there is a risk that resistance to the substance may form, requiring higher doses to reach the desired result.
